Unit converters for SECR & energy reporting
Free, ungated converters for the units that come up when preparing an SECR or energy report. Convert metered gas volume (m³) to kWh using the DEFRA calorific-value conversion, bulk fuel to energy, and switch between energy, volume, weight and length units. Once your activity data is in the right units, run it through the carbon calculator or look up factors in the conversion factors table.
Uses the DEFRA energy-content conversion of 11.182 kWh per m³ (gross CV). Gas suppliers apply a calorific-value correction on each bill, so the exact figure on your statement may vary slightly. DEFRA/DESNZ 2025.
Why these converters?
SECR requires you to report total energy use (in kWh) as well as emissions, but your source data rarely arrives in the right units. Gas meters read in cubic metres, fuel arrives in litres, and energy bills can be in MWh, GJ or therms. These converters get everything onto a common basis. The gas conversion uses the same DEFRA gross calorific-value figure as the carbon calculator, so your numbers stay consistent across tools.
Need the full report, not just the conversion?
A compliant SECR disclosure needs the calculation, a methodology statement, an intensity ratio, year-on-year context and director sign-off filed at Companies House on deadline. A vetted, IEMA-qualified SECR specialist can handle the whole thing. Speak to a specialist — free and no-obligation.
